Active Schools

So, what is an Active School?

An Active School incorporates physical education, physical activity and sport in the educational environment, which includes kindergarten, primary and secondary schools, college, university, etc. An Active School recognises that physical literacy is just as important as learning to read, write and count.

Every child, youth and teenager in Europe attends school which provides the perfect setting for an already “captured audience” to achieve physical activity goals!

WHY are Active Schools so important?
Because you want your community and citizens to succeed!

Active kids and youth are more successful, but why? Physical activity not only helps to lead a healthy and fulfilling life, it can also contribute to a higher disposition to learn and achieve academic excellence, improve attendance, lead to better behaviours (within and outside the classroom), teach skills such as teamwork and leadership, and boost motivation, confidence and self-esteem.

Ultimately, an Active School provides an environment for young people to grow into happy, healthy and active citizens, which will contribute to the life and growth of your municipality.

In Europe, most schools fall under the mandate of municipalities which makes your role even more important. Here are some ways for you to kick start your Active Schools approach. And do not forget to use our Module to build your tailored Active Schools Action Plan!
